I'm Not Guilty: The Case of Ted Bundy (The Development of the Violent Mind Book 1), by Al Carlisle

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KURL7AK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00KURL7AK&linkCode=as2&tag=httpesselprbl-20&linkId=N634FSACZJ4Y2AXO
I'm Not Guilty: The Case of Ted Bundy (The Development of the Violent Mind Book 1), by Al Carlisle is a raw look into the mind of Ted Bundy.  When I received the book, I expected it to be another story of Ted Bundy and the author's viewpoint of how the famed serial killer thinks.

I was wrong.

Instead, the reader is treated with actual conversations and interviews between Ted Bundy and Dr Al Carlisle Ph.D. The reader is taken on an emotional journey through Ted Bundy's life from his preteen years up until his time in prison.  At times, the reader begins to fees empathy with Bundy, but is quickly reminded of the sick and twisted nature of his mind.

Dr. Al Carlisle Ph.D. is not your normal author that writes about the mind of a serial killer.  Instead, he was fortunate to meet Ted Bundy face-to-face and get to know the man behind the murders.  His first hand account of Ted Bundy's revealed reasoning and feelings about the crime is honest and raw.

As an individual that is studying to become a psychologist, I took my time reading I'm Not Guilty and took many notes on the questions and interaction that Dr. Al Carlisle enacted.  I thought I would finish the book in a week, but here I am a couple of months later, and I am just now getting around to the review.

There is a lot of information to soak in, and the details can make the weak stomached individuals squirm, but the read is well worth it.

I recommend I'm Not Guilty: The Case of Ted Bundy (The Development of the Violent Mind Book 1) to anyone that real horror, psychological thrillers, or just an overall good read!

It Won't be much longer: Final Reverie - releasing soon!

http://www.jellingtonashton.com/essel-pratt.html
It won't be long now until Final Reverie is released by J. Ellington Ashton Press. I cannot wait to share the adventures of Chij and Franklyn with all of you. Until then, here is a small excerpt:

“Can you imagine living your life in a box, staring at a box, and clicking little buttons that are shaped like boxes?” said Franklyn. “Not I,” said Chij. “Anyway, if all of the technology was still here I would not be having this conversation with you. I would probably be chained to a tree and drinking from a bowl.” “That is probably true, but that is how things were back then. Can you imagine the period between the demise of technology and the emergence of magic? I heard that a lot of people went crazy and few survived,” said Franklyn. They mused how the humans coped once the dust had settled, as the land renewed itself over the course of years, ushering forth a new age as the devolution caused by the now rotting machines was finally unhindered. How they managed to adjust as magic emerged too, and gained control of the land as the people readjusted their lifestyles, forcing them to rely less on their mechanical crutches. Most of all they wondered about the interaction between man and beast, as they became vocal and intellectual equals in the new world, and how they learned to rely on one another as something other than pet and master."

This book has been in my head for quite some time.  I feared, at one point, that I would never finish it and the tale would be kept secret within my head until the end of my time.  However, I decided to see what would happen after the 2013 NaNoWriMo event.  Somehow I managed to finish the book in that time.  It was rough and missing quite a bit of detail, but the first draft was complete!  I went back through, from beginning to end, and added about 10,000 more words. I was completely ecstatic with my progress.

As I said above, it won't be long now until Final Reverie makes its way into the hands of the fans.  I hope to start on the second book soon.  The working title is Salient Reverie and it will be be another labor of love.

Stay tuned for my toddler's book, which is being worked on now, "The ABC's of Zombie Friendship" which will also be released by JEA Press.

Final Reverie Cover Reveal!

http://www.jellingtonashton.com/essel-pratt.html
As many know, I am currently working on my first novel, titled "Final Reverie".  I received the final cover artwork a couple of days ago and could not be more excited about the way it turned out!

Before I get into the book itself, I need to give a huge thank you to artist David McGlumphy, he did an outstanding job.  His top notch communication and desire to gather my input was unsurpassed.  I didn't know what to expect, but he ensured I was informed throughout the process.  This cover will undoubtedly draw attention to the story within!

Final Reverie is the story of two adolescent boys, one human and one wolf.  Due to a reemergence of magic upon the world, the powers of good and evil were quickly thrown off balance.  An evil incarnate, Nafets, works on emerging form a subterranean prison while the boys, Chij and Franklyn, are tasked with the mission to destroy him. However, Atrin - a beast with a similar but more nefarious mission plans on stealing their thunder.

Final Reverie is the first of three books, told in reverse order, in the Reverie series.  The second book is still in the works and will tell the story prior to Final Reverie, reintroducing us to characters from within.

I want to give a thank you to everyone at J. Ellington Ashton Press for the kindness and support that they provided through this process.  I wasn't sure what to expect, but I never expected such a supportive family of writers and artists!

Holly was a writer for Infendo when I first started writing for the site and it really was sad to see her go!

Affleck and Batman and other Super Hero Thoughts

Over the past few days, the internet has been aflutter with news that Ben Affleck has been chosen as the new Batman.   While there are more important items to focus on in the news, sometimes insignificant stories such as this are needed to break the monotony of terrible things we often see in the news.

So, I thought I would humor the news and share my thoughts and views on his selection, as well as some of the past superhero decisions.  Since we are talking about Ben Affleck, let's start out with Daredevil.  Now, I thought the Daredevil movie was okay.  It was not mind blowing, and it was not horrible, just okay...  For me, Ben did a pretty good job, but the movie itself was not the best portrayal of his character.  If Daredevil were made now, within the new Marvel Movie Universe, I think we would see a movie of a much higher caliper.  Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, The Avengers, and Wolverine have all set the groundwork for a believable universe in which to reintroduce the characters that failed to captivate the past audiences.

Even an attempt to bring us DC's Green Lantern was not an utter failure.  I actually enjoyed Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan.  Sure, he was not as serious as I would have wanted him to be, but he played the role well.  I do see him more as Deadpool, which he would undoubtedly be amazing at.

One thing I have learned from growing up with comic books, and some of you comic living friends may be able to back me up here, is that the heroes (and villains) did not always choose their destine, fate did.  Many of them were unlikely heroes, Spiderman is a great example.  From the outside, he was just an ordinary kid, nothing special except his intellect, and happened to be in the right place at the right time.  No one would have ever guessed that there was anything spectacular or amazing about him.  But there was, and he made a huge difference in the Marvel Universe.

If characters in a comic can be portrayed by those that do not "fit the bill" as a superhero, why can't real life actors play characters that seem an inconceivable fit?  In my opinion, choosing Ben Affleck as Batman is a great choice.  Visually, he is believable.  His voice is a match (with some voice coaching, his ridiculed Boston accent can be gone).  Everything about him screams that he fits the role, especially since he is not a likely choice.

When young Bruce Wayne witnessed the unforgiving murder of his parents, he was in no shape to make a decision to dress like a caricature of a bat and rid Gotham of inconceivable villains, the likes the world had never seen.  No, he took his anger, his hate, his sadness, and his hope for a better future and evolved into the hero that he as become.  The super villains just sort of came along with time.  Bruce's evolution was not exactly planned, instead it was a process that our unlikely character slowly transitioned through.  That is why Ben Affleck will be a good fit for Batman, he is not the choice of the masses, yet he will fit in fine.

The only issue I have with Ben Affleck as Batman is summed up in one question.  How long will he be willing to portray the caped crusader?  Too often, especially with Batman; Superman; and Spiderman, we see multiple characters take the role for short periods of time.  For the sake of continuity we need someone that is in it for the long hall.  This is why I am happy that they did not include Spiderman in the Avengers (ignoring the fact that Spiderman is a FOX franchise at the moment).  If we are to create a believable universe, we need continuity.  It is my hope that Ben Affleck will eventually be accepted by the masses, but even more so, I hope he is in it for the long haul.  If we have a glimmer of hope for the Justice League to become just as amazing as the Avengers, and for DC to find its imprint in the Cinematic World as Marvel has, we need to see believable characters that grow within their roles and mesh well with the rest of the universe.  Not to mention that they need to stay true to the origins of the comics.  (Notice I did not mention X-Men in here anywhere....sigh, they started out okay, but after the third it went downhill.  I hope the next one brings things back into line).

In closing, I feel that the negative hype about Ben Affleck is not warranted.  Forget who he is, let's see who he becomes.  We did it with Heath Ledger and Michael Keaton, and both absorbed themselves into their roles, becoming icons for generations to come.
